A few weeks ago I realized that I had a business trip coming up in DC on Thursday, September 3rd and it occurred to me to rent a car and ride the bike home. The Federal Demonstration Partnership meeting was today with a good session on the Federal government's Uniform Guidance for grants at the Hyatt Regency near the U.S. Capitol and that's where I stayed last night.
After the afternoon session ended I had some work to do. With 5:00 DC traffic I needed to drive across town to the Hotel Lombardy (my favorite and affordable hotel in Washington).
I'm sure that the doorman thought it a bit odd that the rental car had two panniers, an empty box (see below), a handlebar bag, a plastic bag with my helmet and water bottles, a bike, a front wheel that needed to be attached and an overnight bag. But he never blinked or looked askance. We brought all the stuff into the hotel, he helped me bring everything into my room then watched the car out on the street as I changed into shorts.
Next was a trip to Exxon to refill the tank and then on to Vermont and L Streets to return the vehicle to Enterprise.
There was a mile walk back to the hotel to send the business clothes back to Pittsburgh through UPS. I thought it strategic to mail back anything excess to reduce the weight on the ride. But I outsmarted myself and sent home the charger cable for my electric razor. Not a big deal but with the weekend and the Labor Day Holiday the box won't arrive until Wednesday and I need to return to work that day. I know that the razor won't hold a charge until then so shaving will not be frequent on the ride.
Gosh, the UPS lady was grumpy.
Finally, I was off to my usual DC Thai food restaurant on I Street on the George Washington University campus. Only to find out that it had closed in order to be razed by GW.
I did, however, find the new spot a few blocks up 21st Street.
I shaved two pounds off the ride this time with a purchase of lighter Keen skater shoes. They were on sale at Amazon because skater shoes are no longer sought after by the cool kids but they work fine for this old man.
The bike is ready and I'll be off early tomorrow to Harpers Ferry, WV.
I'll stopping in different towns on this trip. My goal is to attack the mountain past Cumberland early in the morning on Monday when I'm rested and it's cooler.
